Pool Fence Requirements
Under AS 1926.1, pool barriers must:
- Be at least 1.2m high
- Have no gaps greater than 100mm
- Have no climbable objects within 900mm
- Have self-closing, self-latching gates
- Gates must open outward from pool
Non-Climbable Zone
- 900mm from inside and outside of fence
- Remove trees, pot plants, furniture
- Includes boundary fence if used
Registration and Inspection
- All pools must be registered (varies by state)
- Regular inspections required (typically every 3-4 years)
- Certificate of compliance needed
- Required when selling or leasing
Common Compliance Issues
- Climbable objects near fence
- Gate not self-closing properly
- Latch not working or too low
- Gaps in fence or gate
- House doors opening to pool area without compliance
