Check their license number with your state authority. Plumbers, electricians, builders, and many other trades require licenses.

Ask for certificate of currency. Minimum $5M recommended. Protects you if something goes wrong.

Check their ABN at abr.business.gov.au. Confirms they're a registered business.

Detailed written quote with scope, price, and inclusions. Avoid "she'll be right" verbal quotes.

Ask for 2-3 recent references and actually call them. Ask about quality, timing, and communication.

For larger jobs, get a written contract covering scope, price, timeline, and payment terms.
